Japan Replies

Minke Whales Safe, Japan Replies:

"In reply to criticism that its slaughter of pregnant minke whales in the Southern Ocean is endangering the species, Japan says the high pregnancy rates show the species is safe."

Did this discovery have to require the killing of the Minke Whales in the first place?

Whatever happened to good old-fashioned observation and simply counting the whales?

This is good news.... but the ends don't justify the means!

Counting whales today only tells you how many whales there are today.

It doesn't tell you how many whales there will be next year.

Understanding biological information such as rates of reproductivity is thus useful information for anyone wishing to undertake commercial whaling.

It is good news.

Your comment that the ends don't justify the means, however, is just a reflection of your view that whales shouldn't be killed for any reasons.

Whaling peoples tend to disagree - they do think science such as this is justified, in pursuit of understanding whale stocks that may in future be harvested commercially for food.

So long as everyone respects that there are diverse views on this point, we should be able to find common ground by agreeing that any whaling that does occur must be sustainable.
